DCGT Turning Inserts

What Is a DCGT Insert?

A DCGT insert is a 55° rhombic, single-sided positive turning insert with a 7° clearance angle and G-class precision, commonly used for finishing, profiling and light turning where sharp cutting action, low cutting forces and good dimensional accuracy are required.

DCGT Insert Applications

DCGT inserts are positive, precision-ground 55° turning inserts commonly used for finishing, profiling and light turning. Depending on the selected grade, coating and edge geometry, they can be applied to steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous materials and heat-resistant alloys.

Finishing & Light Turning

The positive cutting geometry and sharp cutting action make DCGT inserts suitable for finishing and light turning where low cutting forces and dimensional accuracy are required.

Profiling & Contouring

The 55° rhombic shape provides good accessibility for profile turning, contour machining and operations involving changing tool paths.

Internal Turning & Boring

The positive clearance geometry helps reduce cutting forces during internal turning, boring and finishing of smaller diameters.

Multi-Material Machining

With the appropriate carbide grade, coating, chipbreaker and edge preparation, DCGT inserts can be configured for different ISO workpiece material groups.

DCGT Inserts FAQs

What is the difference between DCGT and DCMT inserts?
DCGT and DCMT inserts share the same 55° rhombic shape and 7° clearance angle, but they use different tolerance classes. DCGT inserts use the tighter G-class tolerance and are generally preferred for precision finishing, while DCMT inserts use the wider M-class tolerance. Always confirm the insert dimensions and holder seat before treating them as interchangeable.
How should I choose the corner radius for a DCGT insert?
A smaller corner radius reduces cutting forces and is often suitable for light cuts, slender components and fine profiling. A larger corner radius provides a stronger cutting corner and can support higher feeds, but it requires greater setup rigidity and may increase the risk of vibration.
Should I use a coated or uncoated DCGT insert?
Sharp, uncoated or polished DCGT inserts are commonly selected for aluminum and other non-ferrous materials where edge sharpness and resistance to material buildup are important. Coated grades are generally considered for steels, stainless steels and other demanding materials where heat resistance and wear resistance are required. The final choice should reflect the workpiece material, cutting speed, coolant and target surface finish.
How do I select a chipbreaker for a DCGT insert?
Select the chipbreaker according to the workpiece material, feed rate and depth of cut. Finishing chipbreakers are designed to control chips during light cuts and low feeds, while more open geometries are used for greater feed rates or depths of cut. The selected cutting conditions should remain within the recommended working range of the chipbreaker.
How do I know whether a DCGT insert fits my toolholder?
Match the insert size code, seat size, clamping method, holder hand and approach angle with the toolholder specification. A DCGT 0702 insert and a DCGT 11T3 insert require different holder seat sizes. The same 55° insert shape alone does not guarantee compatibility.
What should I check if a DCGT insert produces a poor surface finish?
Check toolholder rigidity, insert seating, tool overhang, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and the relationship between feed and corner radius. Built-up edge, an unsuitable chipbreaker, excessive wear or an incorrect grade can also reduce surface quality. Adjust one factor at a time and inspect the cutting edge before replacing the complete setup.
