HNMX Milling Inserts

What Is a HNMX Insert?

HNMX is a hexagonal milling-insert family with nominal zero clearance, M-class tolerance and a special hole or chip-forming configuration. Double-sided variants are used in compatible face mills. HNMX0704 and HNMX0906 belong to different cutter interfaces, so the exact insert drawing governs selection.

HNMX Insert Applications

Select the insert and cutter as a complete system. Review the operation, component geometry, machine rigidity and engagement before choosing the grade, coating and edge preparation.

Face Roughing

Removes stock from broad surfaces in compatible face-milling systems.

General Face Milling

Balances productivity and finish through suitable tooth pitch, grade and edge preparation.

Interrupted Facing

Machines interrupted surfaces after reviewing impact, engagement and edge toughness.

Semi-Finish Facing

Prepares a consistent face for the final operation with controlled axial runout and stock allowance.

HNMX Insert FAQ

Does a hexagonal outline guarantee twelve usable edges?
No. Relief features, wiper areas, pocket support and the mounting arrangement determine which edges are usable on each face.
Why can a double-sided insert still cut with a positive rake?
The rake face can be shaped positively while the insert body retains nominal zero clearance; the installed cutter orientation determines working angles.
What should be checked before turning an insert over?
Inspect the second face and seating pads for chip indentation, cracks and contamination, then clean the pocket and verify the permitted orientation.
Why does the exit side of the workpiece chip the insert?
A thin or unsupported exit can reverse the load abruptly. Review cutter offset, approach path, feed, edge preparation and workpiece support.
Can two HNMX sizes share the same fixing screw?
Matching a hole diameter alone is insufficient. Thread engagement, screw head, countersink contact, torque and clearance must match the cutter specification.
How should a face-milling acceptance trial be arranged?
Compare several passes using controlled stock allowance, work material, runout and toolpath, then record flatness, burrs, finish and wear by pocket.
