RDKW Milling Inserts

What Is a RDKW Milling Insert?

An RDKW insert is an ISO round milling insert with 15° clearance, K-class tolerance, and a fixing-hole configuration. Its positive flank differs from 11° RPMT geometry, so matching only the diameter is not sufficient for interchange.

RDKW Milling Insert Applications

RDKW inserts are selected as part of a complete cutter system. Application suitability depends on the cutter body, pocket geometry, work material, engagement, machine rigidity, and manufacturer limits.

Contour Milling

Tracks convex and concave surfaces using compatible cutter geometry and controlled stepovers.

Copy Milling

Produces sculptured surfaces where a round cutting edge improves directional flexibility.

Face Milling

Generates flat areas when the cutter body is designed to position the RDKW edge correctly.

Cavity Milling

Roughs pockets under cutter-specific limits for entry, chip evacuation, and maximum engagement.

Die and Mold Machining

Machines blended three-dimensional forms with attention to overhang, runout, and edge loading.

RDKW Milling Insert FAQ

What is the practical difference between RDKW and RPMT?
The second ISO letter indicates different clearance: RDKW uses 15°, while RPMT uses 11°. Tolerance and hole/chip-form details also differ.
Why should the RDKW 1604 and 1605 rows not be combined?
They have different nominal thicknesses and hole data, so they represent different pocket interfaces even though both use a 16 mm round profile.
How is an indexing position rejected after inspection?
Reject a position showing edge chipping, crater damage reaching the edge, thermal cracks, plastic deformation, coating loss tied to substrate failure, or a damaged seating area.
What can cause chatter with a round RDKW cutter?
Excessive overhang, weak fixturing, radial engagement, tooth count, runout, worn pockets, unsuitable pitch, and speed near a system resonance are common causes.
When should a smaller RDKW diameter be considered?
Consider it for smaller features, lower cutting force, tighter contour access, or a cutter platform better matched to spindle power and component geometry.
Which acceptance checks matter for custom RDKW production?
Verify IC, thickness, hole, countersink, clearance, roundness, edge profile, chipbreaker location, seating contact, coating, batch traceability, and cutter trial results.
