CNMG Turning Inserts

What Is a CNMG Insert?

A CNMG insert is an 80° rhombic, double-sided negative turning insert with a 0° clearance angle, M-class tolerance and a central fixing hole. Its strong cutting corners and double-sided construction make the family commonly used for general turning, facing, boring and roughing-to-finishing operations, subject to the selected chipbreaker, carbide grade, coating and cutting conditions.

CNMG Insert Applications

CNMG inserts are widely used for stable general-turning operations that benefit from a strong 80° cutting corner and double-sided insert economy. The suitable operation range depends on chipbreaker geometry, edge preparation, grade, coating, workpiece material and machine rigidity.

External Turning

CNMG inserts are commonly used for longitudinal external turning where a strong cutting corner and stable tool setup are available.

Facing & Shoulder Turning

The 80° rhombic form supports facing and selected shoulder-turning operations when matched with the correct holder approach angle.

Internal Turning & Boring

CNMG inserts can be used in sufficiently rigid boring bars for internal turning and boring of suitable diameters.

Medium Machining & Roughing

Stronger edge preparations and suitable chipbreakers can support medium machining and roughing under stable cutting conditions.

Multi-Material Turning

Different substrates, coatings, chipbreakers and edge preparations can be evaluated for steels, stainless steels, cast irons and other workpiece groups.

CNMG Inserts FAQs

What does CNMG mean in a turning insert designation?
In the ISO designation, C identifies an 80° rhombic shape, N indicates 0° clearance, M is the tolerance class, and G identifies the hole and chipbreaker configuration. The following numbers define nominal size, thickness and corner radius.
How many cutting edges does a CNMG insert have?
A conventional double-sided CNMG insert has four corners on each face, providing up to eight indexable cutting edges when the chipbreaker and holder arrangement permit both faces to be used.
What is the difference between CNMG and CCMT inserts?
CNMG is a double-sided negative insert with 0° clearance and a strong 80° corner. CCMT is a single-sided positive insert with 7° clearance. They require different holder seats and are selected for different cutting-force, accessibility and edge-strength requirements.
Which CNMG size should I choose?
Start with the toolholder seat specification, then match the ISO size, thickness, hole diameter and corner radius. Larger inserts and radii generally provide greater edge strength but require adequate machine power, rigidity and clearance.
How should I select a CNMG chipbreaker and grade?
Base the selection on workpiece material, operation, depth of cut, feed, cutting speed, coolant, interrupted-cut severity and machine stability. Use the intended working range of the selected chipbreaker rather than choosing by insert shape alone.
Can CarbideMatch manufacture a custom CNMG insert?
Custom dimensions, edge preparation, top geometry, carbide material, coating, marking or packaging can be reviewed from your drawing and application information. Feasibility should be confirmed before specification, sampling or production commitments are made.
