ODMT Milling Inserts

What Is a ODMT Milling Insert?

An ODMT insert is an ISO 135° octagonal milling insert with 15° clearance, M-class tolerance, and a fixing-hole/chip-forming configuration. Its positive single-sided octagon provides eight cutting edges in compatible 45° face-milling systems.

ODMT Milling Insert Applications

ODMT inserts are selected as part of a complete cutter system. Application suitability depends on the cutter body, pocket geometry, work material, engagement, machine rigidity, and manufacturer limits.

45° Face Milling

Produces flat surfaces with a compatible face mill that positions the octagonal edge at the intended entering angle.

Chamfer Milling

Creates edge breaks and chamfers where cutter diameter, lead angle, and programmed offset are verified.

Plunge Milling

Feeds primarily in the axial direction only with a cutter system explicitly designed for plunging.

Ramp Milling

Enters along an incline within the cutter maker's maximum ramp angle and engagement limits.

Rough-to-Finish Facing

Uses chipbreaker, grade, wiper strategy, and feed selected for the required productivity and surface finish.

ODMT Milling Insert FAQ

Why does ODMT offer eight edges without being double-sided?
The octagonal top profile supplies eight index positions on one positive cutting face; the 15° flank prevents the underside from acting as a second cutting face.
Can ODMT 0504 and 0605 use the same cutter pocket?
No assumption should be made. Their size, IC, thickness, hole, seating geometry, and edge location differ and must match the designated cutter.
What makes ODMT useful for 45-degree face milling?
The cutter presents each octagonal edge at the designed entering angle, spreading chip load and using multiple economical index positions.
Why might a chamfer cut measure wider than programmed?
Insert runout, cutter diameter error, axial setting, tool deflection, spindle condition, edge radius, work offset, and the actual lead geometry can change chamfer width.
How should an ODMT wiper strategy be validated?
Check whether the cutter accepts a wiper insert, set its axial projection as specified, control runout, then verify finish and load at the intended feed.
What should a purchase drawing state for a custom ODMT insert?
State IC or edge length convention, thickness, hole and countersink, 15° flank, corner radius, chipbreaker, seat datums, tolerances, coating, edge preparation, and compatible cutter model.
